The AtheistsClub usually responds to notes and messages within one week. We do better on some days than others, but seven days seems to be the practical limit on how much we can do when things get busy. We almost never get complaints, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows, we are definitely not ignoring you if it takes that long! Thanks for understanding.

On October 7, 2007 president of the Catholic League, William A. Donohue called for a boycott of the film Golden Compass saying he would not ordinarily object to the film, but that while the religious elements will be diluted from the source material, the film will encourage children to read the novels, which he says promote "atheism for kids."

Well, with a recommendation like that, I naturally went to see the movie. It bombed at the box office (and rightfully so) but it did get me to check out the books. Not a bad read.

The interesting thing is that I hadn't even heard of the movie until I heard the call for a boycott to prevent atheism. Thanks guys!

JOURNAL 2007.12.10

HUMANISM

This week, we come to the summary of the Humanist Manifesto III of the American Humanist Association.

"Working to benefit society maximizes individual happiness. Progressive cultures have worked to free humanity from the brutalities of mere survival and to reduce suffering, improve society, and develop global community. We seek to minimize the inequities of circumstance and ability, and we support a just distribution of nature’s resources and the fruits of human effort so that as many as possible can enjoy a good life.

Humanists are concerned for the well being of all, are committed to diversity, and respect those of differing yet humane views. We work to uphold the equal enjoyment of human rights and civil liberties in an open, secular society and maintain it is a civic duty to participate in the democratic process and a planetary duty to protect nature’s integrity, diversity, and beauty in a secure, sustainable manner.

Thus engaged in the flow of life, we aspire to this vision with the informed conviction that humanity has the ability to progress toward its highest ideals. The responsibility for our lives and the kind of world in which we live is ours and ours alone."

Tryptonique

New member, ~Tryptonique has a clever essay I think you'll enjoy. An Explanation of My Atheism combines rational exposition with a wonderfully twisted sense of humor. Here is a short excerpt.

You are in your room and a sentient being pops in through an open window (use your imagination as to what form this being takes). He starts doing miracles to convince you that he is in fact, "god." He turns water into wine, walks on water, balances the federal budget, and tells you who killed JFK. In that instance, how do you in fact *know* that this being is in fact god and not simply a space alien with superior technological prowess and an evolved consciousness? How do you know it isn't a crazy evolved super virus that you ate in some turkey dinner your crazy Aunt Mildred made for Thanksgiving dinner that is eating away at your brain and causing delusions?

Read the whole essay here: and let ~Tryptonique know what you think. His replies to the various comments he has received are worth reading as well. I'll post a few of those in the coming weeks.

HUMANISM

This week, we continue our series on humanism with the fifth statement in the Humanist Manifesto III from the American Humanist Association.

"Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships. Humanists long for and strive toward a world of mutual care and concern, free of cruelty and its consequences, where differences are resolved cooperatively without resorting to violence. The joining of individuality with interdependence enriches our lives, encourages us to enrich the lives of others, and inspires hope of attaining peace, justice, and opportunity for all."

More next week.

EVOLUTION

~Vortarian recently asked about where to find information on evolution.

Especially if you're just getting started, I'd like to recommend Evolution, a seven-episode, eight-hour series on evolution, produced by Boston PBS station WGBH which also has a book, Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea, by science journalist Carl Zimmer, and a web site (pbs.org/wgbh/evolution) to go with it. If you get the DVD through the NCSE's link to Amazon you help fund a good cause.

The NCSE also has an excellent list of evolution related links at [link] as well.

Funny: Rain Dance

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue joined lawmakers and ministers on the steps of the state capitol to pray for rain. Ellen Johnson of American Atheists comments in this video. (YouTube)

Not-So-Funny: Reconstructionists

Jeremy Leaming writes about Christian Reconstructionists, [who] seek to impose the criminal code of the Old Testament, applying the death penalty for homosexuals, adulterers, fornicators, witches, incorrigible juvenile delinquents and those who spread false religions.

JOURNAL 2007.11.19

HUMANISM

In this week's journal we continue our series of articles about humanism. We're moving on to the fourth statement in the Humanist Manifesto III as put forth by the American Humanist Association.

"Life’s fulfillment emerges from individual participation in the service of humane ideals. We aim for our fullest possible development and animate our lives with a deep sense of purpose, finding wonder and awe in the joys and beauties of human existence, its challenges and tragedies, and even in the inevitability and finality of death. Humanists rely on the rich heritage of human culture and the lifestance of Humanism to provide comfort in times of want and encouragement in times of plenty."

Of course, what can we do without creationism to explain everything? Maybe turn to science and the awe inspiring reality of nature?
