Atheist's Club

Mon Oct 8, 2007, 10:20 AM
WELCOME

AtheistsClub is for the most deviant of deviants: atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, and all hard core freethinkers.

The AtheistsClub promotes artists that share a way of thinking and living that aims to bring out the best in people so that all people can have the best in life. Our members reject supernatural and authoritarian beliefs. They affirm that we must take responsibility for our own lives and the communities and world in which we live. The AtheistsClub is for artists who emphasize reason and scientific inquiry, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation. Oh, and let's have some fun too!

Join the club! Just send us a note.

JOURNAL 2007.10.08

Humanism

In this week's journal we begin a series of articles about humanism, one of the most popular and well established life-philosophies among free thinkers. We'll start by taking a look at the first part of the Humanist Manifesto III as put forth by the American Humanist Association.

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

The lifestance of Humanism—guided by reason, inspired by compassion, and informed by experience— encourages us to live life well and fully. It evolved through the ages and continues to develop through the efforts of thoughtful people who recognize that values and ideals, however carefully wrought, are subject to change as our knowledge and understandings advance. This document is part of an ongoing effort to manifest in clear and positive terms the conceptual boundaries of Humanism, not what we must believe but a consensus of what we do believe.

How does Humanism sound to you so far? In next week's journal we'll get into the specific statements of the manifesto itself.

ONE WEEK

The AtheistsClub usually responds to notes and messages within one week. We do better on some days than others, but seven days seems to be the practical limit on how much we can do when things get busy. We almost never get complaints, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows, we are definitely not ignoring you if it takes that long! Thanks for understanding.

Googlism

Yes! It's the Church of Google.

The first commandment:
"Thou shalt have no other Search Engine before me, neither Yahoo nor Lycos, AltaVista nor Metacrawler. Thou shalt worship only me, and come to Google only for answers."

Thanks go to AtheistsClub member ~ccnutlime for sending in the link.

If God is willing to prevent evil but is unable to,
Then He is not omnipotent.
If He is able but not willing,
Then He is malevolent.
If He is both able & willing,
Then whence cometh evil?
If He is neither able nor willing,
Then why call Him God?

Hey, I put the term 'omlg'(Oh my lack of god) to Urban Dictionary. Look for it in a few days, if they decide to put it up.

Well, Google's all-knowing, sure, but is it benevolent?

I consider myself a Humanist, sort of. I think that some people need superstition and religion - i.e., those dying of genocide in Darfur, with no other place to turn for hope - but I think that humans can make ethical and moral decisions without religion or superstition.
