Atheist's Club

Mon Oct 29, 2007, 8:53 AM
WELCOME

AtheistsClub is for the most deviant of deviants: atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, and all hard core freethinkers.

The AtheistsClub promotes artists that share a way of thinking and living that aims to bring out the best in people so that all people can have the best in life. Our members reject supernatural and authoritarian beliefs. They affirm that we must take responsibility for our own lives and the communities and world in which we live. The AtheistsClub is for artists who emphasize reason and scientific inquiry, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation. Oh, and let's have some fun too!

How to Join
Becoming a member of the AtheistsClub is easy, just add us to your friends list. We will confirm your membership by adding you to ours. If you really want to be uber-cool, you can also send us a self-portrait for our gallery. Its not required for membership, it's just fun.

JOURNAL 2007.10.29

MEMBERS ROCK!

I wanted to say thank you to all our AtheistsClub members. A number of you offered to pitch in and help the club as we re-organize to deal with our ever growing numbers. Some of you even noticed that our DA subscription had run out--and got us a new one! I can't tell you how gratifying it is to know that so many people are willing to help us out.

Behind the scenes we are still re-organizing so you'll see odd things here and there, and the journal will be a little thin until next year, but things are going along well.

Again, thank you all for your support.

-Charles

HUMANISM

In this week's journal we continue our series of articles about humanism. We're moving on to the second statement in the Humanist Manifesto III as put forth by the American Humanist Association.

"Humans are an integral part of nature, the result of unguided evolutionary change. Humanists recognize nature as self-existing. We accept our life as all and enough, distinguishing things as they are from things as we might wish or imagine them to be. We welcome the challenges of the future, and are drawn to and undaunted by the yet to be known."

More next week.

ART

Our own ~lordogreus sent in his work Smokin' Jesus for us to to check out, and ~bleakmidwintertears's Remains really caught my eye as well.

LINKS

AtheistsClub maintains a collections of resource links to help our members explore the free-thinking world.

ONE WEEK

The AtheistsClub usually responds to notes and messages within one week. We do better on some days than others, but seven days seems to be the practical limit on how much we can do when things get busy. We almost never get complaints, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows, we are definitely not ignoring you if it takes that long! Thanks for understanding.

I totally agree!! I think people have forgotten that we are animals too and also a part of (and therefore come from) nature. There is nothing separating as from it except our vain sense of superiority brought on by religion. I also learnt from one of the university units I have taken last semester (the Sociology of Nature :D ) that the nature/culture (women are seen as nature and men are seen as culture) dichotomy was created to justify the exploitation of women and nature. This is because nature was (and maybe still is) seen as female. This created a cycle in which: nature was to be exploited because it was considered female and therefore should be exploited as women were exploited; women were expected to be exploited the same way as nature, because they are female like nature, and by definition, should be exploited the same way. Well, this is according to the person who wrote the ‘Death of Nature’ anyway. ^^; It’s pretty interesting stuff, though. :D :D :D The chapter that was used for the unit outlined the process of nature as being female to protect it from exploitation by been seeing as our mother (you don't dig into your mother's entrails for gold and jewels so you should not do it to the Earth, something like that), to the perception of nature as female to justify the exploitation of nature during the Industrial Revolution (well, at least that's how I remember it! ^^; )

PS

Sorry for the really long speech! ^^; :D :D
