Atheist's Club

Thu Nov 29, 2007, 8:43 AM
WELCOME

AtheistsClub is for the most deviant of deviants: atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, and all hard core freethinkers.

The AtheistsClub promotes artists that share a way of thinking and living that aims to bring out the best in people so that all people can have the best in life. Our members reject supernatural and authoritarian beliefs. They affirm that we must take responsibility for our own lives and the communities and world in which we live. The AtheistsClub is for artists who emphasize reason and scientific inquiry, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation. Oh, and let's have some fun too!

How to Join
Becoming a member of the AtheistsClub is easy, just add us to your friends list. We will confirm your membership by adding you to ours. If you really want to be uber-cool, you can also send us a self-portrait for our gallery. Its not required for membership, it's just fun.

JOURNAL 2007.11.26

HUMANISM

This week, we continue our series on humanism with the fifth statement in the Humanist Manifesto III from the American Humanist Association.

"Humans are social by nature and find meaning in relationships. Humanists long for and strive toward a world of mutual care and concern, free of cruelty and its consequences, where differences are resolved cooperatively without resorting to violence. The joining of individuality with interdependence enriches our lives, encourages us to enrich the lives of others, and inspires hope of attaining peace, justice, and opportunity for all."

More next week.

EVOLUTION

~Vortarian recently asked about where to find information on evolution.

Especially if you're just getting started, I'd like to recommend Evolution, a seven-episode, eight-hour series on evolution, produced by Boston PBS station WGBH which also has a book, Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea, by science journalist Carl Zimmer, and a web site (pbs.org/wgbh/evolution) to go with it. If you get the DVD through the NCSE's link to Amazon you help fund a good cause.

The NCSE also has an excellent list of evolution related links at [link] as well.

Funny: Rain Dance

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue joined lawmakers and ministers on the steps of the state capitol to pray for rain. Ellen Johnson of American Atheists comments in this video. (YouTube)

Not-So-Funny: Reconstructionists

Jeremy Leaming writes about Christian Reconstructionists, [who] seek to impose the criminal code of the Old Testament, applying the death penalty for homosexuals, adulterers, fornicators, witches, incorrigible juvenile delinquents and those who spread false religions.

ONE WEEK

The AtheistsClub usually responds to notes and messages within one week. We do better on some days than others, but seven days seems to be the practical limit on how much we can do when things get busy. We almost never get complaints, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows, we are definitely not ignoring you if it takes that long! Thanks for understanding.

Golden Compass movie! Got alot of christan groups up in arms...have you heard?

:peace: on :earth:
:iconvertigo88:
Reconstructionists...why can't people live in the past without all the barbarism? You know, like the Amish. If anyone's got religion right, it's those guys. You never hear of Amish sectarian violence, you never see two Amish get into a fistfight, and they mostly keep their beliefs to themselves.

The Golden Compass movie? What about it could possibly be annoying Christians? O_o

I haven't seen the movie, but the book was quite critical of Christianity. It makes more sense than accusing Harry Potter of being the devil. :)

Keep up the good work!

the article about Christian Reconstructionists is truly terrifying. *prepares an anti-religion bunker*

Where are we going... and why are we in a handbasket?

:typerhappy:
:icondarkdaria713:
Or the Quakers. Who can get mad at the Society of Friends?
Unless I'm horribly uninformed, and those are the Amish... ^^; I tend to pay more attention to the theists that attack my beliefs, not the nice ones.

I'm gonna be first in line to see that. I loved the books, and... Honestly, that guy has guts.
